MELBOURNE CHANNEL DEEPENING PROJECT, REFINED SCOUR STUDY

The study covered the Yarra River shipping channels from Beacons 23 / 24, near the mouth of the Yarra River, upstream to the Bolte Bridge, with special consideration of the Swanson Dock swing basin for the container vessels. It addressed ship induced return currents and their impact on the erodability of cohesive soils, the rates of which were also established in the laboratory. In particular the study examined whether or not these currents could expose existing services that cross the river.
