The construction of the new International Airport and the creation of its platform in the sea required the dredging and placement of some 65Mm3 of good reclamation fill, which had to be obtained in an environmentally friendly manner, together with the revetment to protect the fill, and the access channels. This involved the identification of some of the sources of fill available, and the writing of the Contract specification for the dredging and reclamation, including the required soil strengths, as well as specifying the relevant allowable losses during the dredging and reclamation processes. This required the prior agreement of those limits with the Authorities, as well as the methods of monitoring.
The reclamation process required the mixing of marine and land based fill and site trials of the performance of the dredged fill.
The platform is complete and work is continuing on the runways, buildings and infrastructure. |
